The Key Skills to Stand Out

The Key Skills to Stand Out

You always want your resume to reflect your skills, work experience, and knowledge so hiring managers know you meet the requirements of the job you are applying for. However, if you want to truly stand out, you've got to be able to demonstrate more than just your hard skills.

Employers need people with specific hard skills, but they want people who will be good team members and add value to the organization. So if you want to stand out, you'll need to showcase these key skills on your resume and during interviews.

Collaboration and Teamwork

No single person can do their job without the help of others, which means you must be an effective team player. Showcase the ways you have worked positively with others. This can be everything from getting your work in on time to stepping up to help when someone needs it or sharing your ideas and championing the ideas of others.

Communication

It is also important to highlight your interpersonal communication skills. How do you ensure you communicate clearly? What do you do if someone misinterprets a direction? On the job, you will work with people from different backgrounds and who have unique perspectives, so it is necessary to be able to listen to others, communicate effectively and work through conflict professionally.

Adaptability

On the job, things will go wrong, and things will change. Employers want people who can adapt to roadblocks and change quickly, to ensure work stays on track. During interviews, discuss a time you had to face a change and adjust your approach/style/attitude to get things done. Focus on the ways your flexibility and adaptability contributed to success.

Problem-Solving Skills

Creative problem solving is a very important skill -- and it is a skill hiring managers struggle to find in many candidates. Showcase the ways and times you have come up with new ways to solve problems or overcome new challenges. Really focus in on the positive results of your problem-solving skills.

Leadership And Self Accountability

Successful people demonstrate leadership skills because even if they are not in supervisory roles, they often need to step up and take the lead or take responsibility for the work being done. Employers want to hire people who can see the big picture, set a great example and motivate teammates to continue to do their best work, even when stress levels are high, and morale is low. They also want people who hold themselves accountable for their own successes and failures and treat each success and each failure as a learning experience.
