Keep Your Focus at Work - And Still Enjoy the Sunshine!

In the summer, the draw of pools, beaches, outdoor hobbies, and backyard barbecues can make it difficult to focus at work. That doesn't mean that your work performance has to slip, however. You can still enjoy the summer and stay productive and on-task with these five tips.

One: Take Breaks

"Summer Fever" makes it difficult to concentrate on work. Instead of fighting it, embrace your need to take breaks. Work in 60- to 90-minute intervals, and then stand up and take a lap around the office. If the weather is nice, take a lap around the building. Getting up and moving around helps you retackle work with fresh focus.

Similarly, use the summer to take actual lunch breaks. You may not be able to head out to a restaurant, but you can sit outside and get some fresh air. A change of scenery, fresh air and a little Vitamin D can do wonders for your focus.

Two: Drink Water

Staying hydrated is important in the summer, but it is also good for your concentration. Drinking water helps release toxins in your body and helps you stay energized. Water can also help you feel full, so you are less inclined to grab a sugary snack, which can lead to a "crash" that will make you less productive.

Three: Use To-Do Lists

Each morning, make a list of all the things that must be accomplished before the end of the day. This will help you stay on track and will give you a feeling of satisfaction as you cross items off your list.

Four: Stretch and "Deskercise"

Sitting or standing in the same position all day long is hard on your body. It makes you tired and can add to your inability to focus during summer months. Take a few moments in the morning and the afternoon to engage in some light stretching or "desk exercises" to keep the blood flowing and release some tension.

Five: Take Advantage of the Slow Season

Things tend to slow down at work during the summer, which makes it a great time to work on projects you've been putting off, to ask for new responsibilities or to spend time learning a new skill or catching up on trends in your industry.

Bonus Tip: Find a Job That Interests You
