5 Tips to Bring Your Resume Into 2019?

Are you thinking about looking for a new job in the new year? Is your resume still just a list of positions and dates? If you're considering making a change next year, follow these tips to bring your resume into 2019.

One: Update Your Contact Information

This seems basic, but if you haven't updated your contact information in a few years, it pays to take this step. Make sure your address is updated, that your personal email is listed - and be sure to get a new email address if it does not reflect your actual name. In 2019, you look unprofessional and out-of-touch if your email address is something like ilovemydog@aol.com. Finally, include your LinkedIn URL. Don't have a LinkedIn account? Now is the time to set one up and request a personalized URL that includes your name.

Two: Note Your Achievements Over the Last Year

It's important to keep your resume updated with your most recent achievements. Look over past performance reviews and make note of projects you worked on, goals you achieved, new responsibilities you took on, etc. Also think about new skills you have learned, certifications you have completed or other accomplishments. Add the most impressive achievements to your resume.

Three: Add Metrics

As you add your achievements, focus on those that are measurable and quantifiable. Don't just say, "Implemented a new documentation process," say, "Spearheaded an initiative to move the documentation process from manual to digital, saving the team an average of 3 hours per week." Using verifiable numbers shows the value you bring to your employer.

Four: Trim The Fat

Now that you've added some detail, other information will have to go. It can be difficult to cut things out of your resume, but the document should be concise. Start by removing irrelevant or outdated skills. Then move on to jobs that are also outdated and irrelevant. Cut anything that is over 10 years old -- unless you've been working the same job for that time. (Your job at the popcorn stand at the state fair in 1995 probably isn't adding value in 2019). Finally, if you see paragraphs outlining your work experience, change them to more concise bullet points that look cleaner and eat up less space.

Five: Include Keywords

Resume screening software scans documents for keywords and uses the number of matches it finds to score your application. Every job posting will be unique and you will have to update it every time, but most jobs of the same title and industry will use common keywords. Scan several job posts to get a feel for the keywords you need to include in your resume.
