7 Ways to Stand Out on Your Next Temporary Assignment

When you work on a temporary assignment, people expect a lot from you. They expect you to be prompt, hard-working, and have a great attitude. But that's just the start. If you really want to make a great impression, and create more opportunities for yourself, follow these seven best practices:
  1. Be reliable. One of the biggest reasons temporary workers have gotten a bad rap is because they are notoriously unreliable. It may sound simple, but if you want to make a great impression, start by being on time and producing quality work, every day. A little difference in attitude and effort can have a big impact!

  2. Be open to new things. Having the opportunity to build skills and learn new things is one of the greatest benefits of temporary work. On the job, be open to new tasks and willing to absorb what others can teach you. By expanding your skills, you create more future opportunities for yourself.

  3. Be flexible.
    • Try not to lock yourself into rigid hours or specific days you are available to work.
    • Be willing to accept a little less pay in exchange for better learning experiences or opportunities for full-time employment.
    • Come in early or stay late if necessary. Your willingness to go above and beyond will help you stand out.
    • Roll with the punches. A project might turn into something different or we may see your skills being put to better use at assignments that you had not originally thought of. Being willing to accept new challenges will help you make the most of your assignments.

  4. Be honest. If there is an assignment that you're really not interested in, tell us. We can only help you find the assignments that are best fit for you if you help us. On the other hand, if you get to an assignment and it's just not working for you, let your staffing firm know ASAP. And please stay on until a suitable replacement can be found.

  5. Be positive. Maybe temporary work isn't on the top of your list of what you see yourself doing. Knowing that it's a step that will ultimately help your career (whether it's because of additional training, on the job experience, or getting your foot in the door at a company)--you'll be better off approaching your assignments with a smile on your face.

  6. Be a team player. Emphasize through your words and actions that you're interested in helping the team reach its goals. Be respectful to your team leader. Share ideas on how to benefit the team.

  7. Be more than what you signed up for. To make a great lasting impression, make sure to go above and beyond. Ask for more and help others accomplish their goals.
